Exclamation Philadelphia Wireless.

Earthlink was the selected provider for the wireless mesh network which is going up in Philadelphia. Earthlink also has projects in Pasadena, San Francisco, and Milipitas, California. New Orleans is also on the Earthlink list of municipal wifi projects.

At this point in time Earthlink Municipal Networks has only partially completed the build. This may account for us having heard mixed reviews about the wireless service offered by Earthlink in Philadelphia. In some cases customers have complained the service is dropping in and out even with a wifi booster and the router being positioned near or at a window. Other customers have mentioned they are getting a quality signal with broadband-like speeds. We havent received any speed test results at this point.

The network is setup by attaching a wifi box to a street lamp or light post. The placement of the units may account for some of the slower speeds, especially if you live or operate your wireless-enabled computer/laptop on floors above the wifi box(es). We have not confirmed this, it is only a theory.

As the network continues to grow WiFi.com will be offering municipal wifi subdomains for each city/county/state which implements a wireless network like the one going up in Philadelphia. We will offer maps of the current service area, a description of the service, a link to purchase the service, and an email form which will allow people outside the current wifi range to be notified when the service becomes available in thier area.

The Philadelphia WiFi Municipal subdomain will be available to you on or about January 28th, 2007.
