I just sent my son off to college with a mac book and a 802.11n wireless card. His college is not wireless yet, can he use that with my isp here at home? If so how would I go about explaining it to him over the phone.

If there is no WIFI at his school or in the vicinity of his computer the answer is no. Think of it as being too far from a radio tower to get a signal.
