Wi-Fire USB WiFi Adapter Review
The Wi-Fire packaging came with the Wi-Fire device, a retractable USB cable, a quick-setup instruction sheet, and an installation CD.
Installing the Wi-Fire device was relatively simple: pop in the CD, install the software, plug in the USB cable and we were good to go.
The software itself is pretty average with configurations most WiFi users are probably already used to. What was most interesting was the ability to disable the software and utilize the Windows Zero Config service. The install disc also contains links to the current quick-install guide and a full manual for more information.
Once we had everything hooked up, it was time to test out the range and see how it actually works. We found in areas where there is a lot of interference - an area already having significant difficulty in getting a standard wireless signal within range, the Wi-Fire did not help much although when positioned precisely we could see our “bars” increase. We were able to get connected, however a slight shift and the signal was lost. This was not entirely unexpected considering the other devices nearby. We were pleased we even were able to get a signal at all.
In other areas without interference, we did see an increase in signal strength compared to our normal wireless card, but it did seem like we still had to aim the Wi-Fire just right for the maximum improvement. The challenge with this is the device itself does not seem to cooperate very well when not clipped to a monitor and the monitor clip, although stayed put, covered up part of the monitor. Perhaps we installed it incorrectly, but that seemed to be the only way it would stay put.
Despite our challenges with placement of the Wi-Fire, we believe the Wi-Fire overall is a fair device when used properly. There will be areas, like most devices where the Wi-Fire will not be as effective and areas where the Wi-Fire will be incredibly effective. The biggest benefit to the Wi-Fire is its ability to not only increase wireless signal but to operate as a standalone WiFi connection device, no additional network card is required. Essentially you get the best of both worlds – a wireless connection device that can boost the signal.
